Nikon today presented its first mirrorless camera with an APS-C matrix. The Nikon Z50 model is a camera with a 20.9 Mpix matrix, 4K movie mode and advanced functions such as Eye AF. What can the new camera do and how does it compare to the competition?
We already wrote about the Nikon Z50 mirrorless camera in September. Today the camera was officially presented. Thus, Nikon joins the producers who have in their offer a mirror with an APS-C matrix. Let's add – advanced mirrorless camera.
The most important features
- 20.9 Mpix DX matrix

- 4K 30p movie mode and Full HD 120p
- 11 fps serial mode
- Price: PLN 4,299 per body
Nikon Z50 is competition for Sony?
The new camera is dedicated to advanced amateurs, so it is a direct competition, for example for Sony's A6000 series. The heart of the model is the new DX matrix with a resolution of 20.9 Mpix. The camera is equipped with hybrid autofocus with 209 focus areas and offers the recently popular Eye AF function. Therefore, in addition to detecting faces, the camera can also capture the human eye and focus on it. The manufacturer also praises the camera's capabilities when working in low light. The model offers an ISO 100-51200 sensitivity range , with higher values to be useful at work, and in addition autofocus is expected to work flawlessly in low-light illumination of -4EV. At first glance (literally a dozen or so minutes spent with the camera) the AF system works very well. The Eye AF function can be activated even with people in the background. The new camera also guarantees serial mode at a decent level – 11 frames per second. On the minus side, however, you can note the lack of matrix stabilization, which is now becoming more common, and a battery with a capacity of 1120 mAh . Although the manufacturer notes that this is a new type of battery that, despite its low capacity, will guarantee high performance. However, we will have to check this in practice.
Nikon Z50 films in 4K and offers slowmo
Today, virtually every camera is also considered in terms of filming. The Z50 is simply good in this respect. It has the package necessary today, so Full HD mode at 120 fps, thus guaranteeing slow-motion shots, 4K 30p without crop , time-lapse movie mode, smoothly working AF-C mode, microphone input and – what is important for vloggers – screen tilted 180 degrees, non-standard as it tilts down. In addition, it is equipped with touch. However, there are no film profiles in Nikon, and other more advanced features that would make the camera be seen as equipment for an advanced filmmaker. For vloggers, the camera's capabilities should be enough.
Great ergonomics is an important advantage
In terms of ergonomics, the camera looks really positive. It offers relatively small dimensions, but at the same time has a wide and strongly defined grip . In addition to the mode dial, it has two other and several function buttons located around the body. The menu can be operated by touch – on the right side of the screen there are touch buttons that activate, among others photo preview. The menu has remained unchanged compared to larger models of the Z series. It is full of functions, but thanks to a special tab, we can put the most-used ones in one place. The electronic viewfinder works well, it shows no delay and reproduces the image well. The manufacturer guarantees as many as 20 creative modes and a special menu that helps in processing photos. This is certainly an interesting option for amateurs who will be able to process photos immediately in the camera, so they will not need graphics programs. Thanks to the presence of WiFi and Bluetooth, in combination with the SnapBridge application, photos and videos can be quickly transferred to mobile devices. Along with the camera, two lenses of the Z DX system debuted, i.e. the NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f / 3.5-6.3 VR kit pancake and the NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f / 4.5-6.3 VR telezoom.
