Competition has not yet managed to create something that can compete with Sony A9, and the manufacturer has just released Sony A9II. What changes and improvements does the new model bring?
Sony A9 is a camera that two years ago wiped out the competition from the market and since then there has been no model that in its class could threaten him. Meanwhile, the manufacturer just showed Sony A9 II . The camera relative to its predecessor is not a revolution, but it contains several significant improvements.
The most important features
- 20 Mpix FF matrix
- AF – 693 focus points
- Continuous mode 20 fps
- New image processor
- 5 GHz connectivity
- Longer shutter life
- Two UHS-II slots
Same base, new features
Looking at the basic parameters, the camera remained unchanged from its predecessor. It has the same 20-megapixel BSI-CMOS matrix with 20fps serial mode with electronic shutter. The same autofocus – excellent system with 693 phase detection points and 435 contrast detection. The tilted and touch screen and the viewfinder with great resolution of 3.6 million points remained unchanged, which has no "blackouts" during continuous shooting. There are also Real-Time Eye AF and Real-Time Tracking functions and 5-axis matrix stabilization. What has changed? The biggest changes concern wireless connectivity – maybe not for every important, but crucial in the work of a sports photojournalist who must immediately send the material in the highest quality. We receive 5 GHz connectivity and an SSL or TLS data encryption system for FTP transfers. There is also the function of saving voice notes for photos. All this will significantly facilitate and accelerate the work of sports photographers. In turn, USB type C 3.2 connector will be responsible for the wired connection. The serial mode with mechanical shutter has also been improved – it now guarantees up to 10 fps. There is also a newer processor in the model that will provide, among others, better image at high ISO sensitivities. As if the camera could not cope well with high sensitivities now!
Better ergonomics is an important change
Many photographers may not be convinced by Sony due to the average ergonomics of its cameras. In Sony A9 II, the manufacturer decided to further improve the pretty good body . Among the novelties we will find an additional function knob on the top of the camera, a larger joystick, better seals, two card slots in the UHS-II standard and finally an increased grip.In addition, we gain the ability to support the digital audio interface by a hot shoe and also a better shutter – its sound is to be more damped, and the life span increased to as much as 500 thousand. cycles . The whole housing has been even better sealed, which is especially important, for example, when photographing ski jumps, when it is still snowing.
A9 II is not a revolution, but leaves competition behind
If you think about it, you can see that the changes in the new model are not huge. This is mainly an improvement in wireless connectivity and ergonomics, as well as a processor upgrade that will have a positive effect on photos taken at a higher ISO. The fact is, however, that Sony A9 wasn't much to change, because after two years it is still an excellent camera. In addition, the competition has still not been able to create serious opponents for him , so if Sony released the model with more changes, it would compete with itself, and already partially does so through the Sony A7 III model. Certainly Sony specialists still have a lot of aces up their sleeve. Until the competition catches up with them, however, they have no need to show them.
