We test the Thule EnRoute Camera Backpack 25L . Many compartments, clever fastening system and solid construction. Is it enough to buy it at the price suggested by the manufacturer?
Thule EnRoute Camera Backpack 25L is not a strictly photographic backpack, because it is characterized by high universality. We will pack a camera with it, but also a laptop, photo accessories, a few clothes, an umbrella or a bottle of water. We will gain easy access to everything.
The Thule backpack is a solid job
The backpack is made of nylon material and has the characteristic durability of Thule. The look of the backpack is similar to most models of the manufacturer – the most popular color here is black. For this model, we have a choice of black or dark green. In the black version, the backpack is covered with a small gray mesh that makes its appearance more attractive, making it very stylish. Thule backpacks I appreciate, among others, for simplicity in appearance , because it is usually subdued, not flashy. Zippers work virtually flawlessly, except maybe the one with which we open the side chamber intended for the camera. This zipper is a bit harder to pull away and it irritated me a bit when using the backpack. However, this does not change the fact that the locks are solid and, as a result, will not be destroyed soon. The entire back part of the backpack, as well as its straps were covered with a sponge – stiffened and well-profiled – it sticks well to the back, and because it is stiffened there is a small risk that it will deform after prolonged use. The whole back of the backpack has been solidly stiffened, which is especially important – when we keep the equipment like a laptop – it will not hurt him. On the other hand – if you put something undersized, the back of the backpack will not deform, so it will not hurt us in the back. When describing the construction of a backpack, it is impossible not to mention its dimensions. The backpack is 50 cm high, 30 cm wide and 20 cm deep. This translates into a capacity of 25 liters. This is not too much, but for many applications certainly enough – provided that we do not take a lot of equipment with us, or instead of a large SLR camera we use a small mirrorless camera. The solid construction translates into weight because the backpack itself weighs 1.8 kg.
A backpack full of compartments
Characteristic for Thule products is that the backpacks of this manufacturer always have a whole bunch of small compartments, to which you can pack many gadgets and have easy access to them. This is the case with this model. However, when we just want to have one large chamber – this is also an option. We can easily get to it because from the top it is secured, however, not with a lock, but with a catch acting on magnesium. The chances that a heavy camera will fall out through such a flap are not great, but still using the backpack I had such a scenario at the back of the head. The main chamber can also be accessed through two side locks. In the middle of it you will also find two compartments, including one mesh, zippered. To use the entire surface of the chamber, we need to pull out the "cartridge", which is a protective camera system. Ultimately, it is located at the bottom of the backpack, and we get to it directly through the side zipper, which – as I mentioned before – is not the most convenient to unfasten. This cartridge will fit one SLR with a lens or a smaller camera with two lenses. Its interior can be freely divided with the help of special stiffened panels. In addition, after unfastening the zipper on the lid from the inside, you can find a zippered pocket in which to insert memory cards or photo filters. In addition to the main compartment, one more can be found on the front of the backpack. It has three pockets, including one mesh, zippered. However, it is very small, so only small items such as a wallet or keys will fit. On the back part there is a third chamber, just like the front one – independent from the main chamber. Due to the stiffening, it is well suited for storing a laptop or tablet. At the touch we can fit a laptop with a 15.6-inch screen , and thanks to the additional padded partition we can also put a 10-inch tablet there. The other two small pockets will hide several small items. On one of the sides of the backpack has another compartment, which can fit an umbrella or a bottle of mineral water. However, with the help of the strap inside, we can also attach a tripod or monopod from the side, while still using the side partition.
Thule works well on a journey
using the Thule backpack is really comfortable. The well stiffened, but covered with spongy material back makes long-lasting wearing Thule on the back is not a big problem, and the special mesh provides adequate ventilation so that we do not sweat on the back, although in hot weather it is impossible. On the back of the backpack has an additional strap, so you can hold it like a bag, so if you need to do not have to wear it on your back. Using special hooks, we can also attach it to a suitcase. A big plus is that we can quickly get to the main chamber up, but to be sure I preferred not to keep things that could break down when falling to the ground.Getting into the camera through the side part is a little less comfortable than when fastening from the front or back, but you can get used to it. On the other hand, the rear laptop compartment works great , in which the equipment is completely safe and properly separated from the rest of the items in the backpack. If you do not take the camera on a journey, but only a laptop, thanks to its flexibility it will accommodate a pair of clothes or shoes for a change, in addition to a lunch box. You can pack quite a lot into it.
Summary and evaluation
Thule EnRoute Camera Backpack 25L is a handy and solid backpack . On the one hand, its design is simple, but on the other, the backpack hides many small compartments and pockets, and the main compartment closed with magnesium guarantees easy and quick access to objects. The backpack works well during a short trip, as well as during a photographic outdoor. It should be remembered, however, that only one divider is dedicated to the photographer . So if you want to take more lenses, a lamp and a few additional gadgets with you, unfortunately you won't fit them here, and they will not be properly secured and insulated from each other in the main chamber.
