We test the Canon Powershot G7X Mark III camera. This is an advanced compact that offers a rich movie mode. Perfect for a vlogger, but not only – it will also be useful when traveling.
Canon Powershot G7X Mark III belongs to the group of advanced compacts, i.e. cameras with a 1-inch matrix with greater capabilities than amateur models. It is addressed mainly to vloggers, because it is ideal for vlogging. It will also be great as a camera for the holidays.
A stylish camera in compact dimensions
I'm not a fan of Canon compact design, but in the case of the G7X Mark III I can't fault the look, which is really interesting and stylish. In the version with dark-silver elements we got, the camera looks similar to Olympus retro models, although it doesn't try to be retro. A large part of the body was covered with rough rubber, the grip was also slightly scratched. The silver lens and upper part of the housing with the knobs contrast nicely with the black, rubber part and balance it well. All this makes the camera look really stylish, and it is pleasant to hold in your hand. The housing does not touch, and due to the fact that it was mostly covered with rubber, it is protected against scratches. On the upper part of the housing there is a switch, shutter release and a ring around it for controlling the zoom. In addition, we have two knobs: a classic mode knob that allows you to choose from P, Tv, Av, M modes, but also gives you access to movie mode, stage, creative filters or custom mode marked with the letter "C". In addition, there is also room for another knob: to adjust the exposure and a big plus. By using the aperture priority mode and constantly controlling exposure compensation, we can conveniently take pictures that will look better than those taken in the automatic mode. On the upper part of the housing, the manufacturer also placed a flash, which pops up after releasing the lock and can be slightly tilted up, so we do not have to flash directly on the object, but we can reflect the light from the ceiling. On the right side behind the end cap you can find micro HDMI inputs and Micro USB type C , so we can count on fast data transfer. In addition, on the side you can find a button to start wireless connectivity, which will allow you to send photos without a cable via WiFi or Bluetooth. On the left side there was another plug, behind which a very useful microphone input was hidden. A big plus that Canon managed to place the microphone input, it's a pity that there was not enough space on the housing for the hot shoe to which the microphone could be attached. It is also worth adding that there is another knob around the lens, which also allows you to control some parameters – different depending on the mode. For example, in Av mode it allows you to control the aperture. The front part of the housing is dominated by the touch screen, and in addition to it you will find here standard buttons for operating the menu, which also act as buttons for quick access to various options, for example, continuous shooting mode selection. A button with an asterisk is very useful, pressing it blocks the exposure. Interestingly, there was also a REC button next to it, i.e. near the menu dial. This is definitely not the best place for him and recording starts uncomfortably. Strange decision to place the record button in such a place. At the bottom there is space for an SD card and a battery. The NB-13L battery has a fairly small capacity of 1250 mAh and, unfortunately, does not guarantee too long work, because we will take a maximum of 265 photos on one charge, which is a bit small by today's standards. The camera can be charged directly via the USB input and importantly – it can work while charging.
Tilting screen and touch operation
The 3-inch screen with a resolution of 1.04 million points is tilted 180 degrees , which is practically standard today. This solution allows not only to take a selfie, but also to record vlogs without any problems, and yet it is one of the main tasks of this model. The screen can be operated by touch and this applies not only to the choice of focus point. With the help of touch we can also navigate the menu. The menu itself is the same as in the manufacturer's SLR and mirrorless cameras. It consists of five sections dedicated to shooting, playback, wireless connectivity, camera settings and the ability to save commonly used settings under "my menu". Each has from a dozen to several dozen items. When shooting, however, we can quickly go to the short menu, which we can get to by pressing the letter Q, located in the upper right corner of the screen. This menu gives us access to the most important functions, and thus allows, among others set ISO or white balance and in combination with the knobs gives you the ability to easily control the camera. The exposure dial and quick menu meant that I used the camera well in aperture priority mode, which allowed me to shoot without any obstacles in various conditions. However, I missed the viewfinder a bit, because in the strong sun the screen is a bit too dark and it made the work a bit difficult because I had to cover it with my hand. Certainly the screen brightness could be slightly better, considering that we do not have the possibility of using the viewfinder.
A lot of photographic possibilities
The heart of the camera is a 1-inch CMOS matrix with a resolution of 20.9 Mpix , supported by a DIGIC 8 processor. The camera obviously offers recording in RAW. The pictures, however, show that they are made of a good compact, not a SLR or mirrorless camera, because their tonal range is slightly smaller. At ISO sensitivity, it's safe not to exceed 1600 in movie mode and 3200 for photos.A permanently attached camera lens is rather one of those bright ones, for which the producer deserves a plus, because in the case of filming in the interior without a bright lens we would not do much. The lens offers a 4x optical zoom with 24-100 mm focal length range and with variable light f / 1.8-2.8 . It's really a very successful combination. The focal range is wider than in typical kit lenses, and the brightness even at maximum zoom remains high. This not only gives you the opportunity to get a clear picture in a darker room, but also to blur the background as desired. The colors of the photos are characteristic for Canon, so we can count on nice frames with well saturated green and correctly selected white balance. The camera also gives several creative filters, among which the HDR mode deserves special attention , allowing photography with an increased tonal range. This mode works really well, although it works only with static frames. Below are a handful of sample photos taken with the camera. Traditionally, full resolution frames can be found in the gallery . The camera also offers a surprisingly high speed mode serial. With its use, you can take 20 photos in one second – that's what high-end cameras offer, so this compact result positively surprises. A nice idea is also an electronic ND filter that works automatically and allows you to shoot at the maximum aperture even in strong light. It is irreplaceable, because the fastest shutter speed is only 1/2000 s. Autofocus works well , which can quickly and accurately sharpen the image. The focus point can be set by touch, and the set autofocus will follow even when the subject or person is moving. Pictures can be saved in RAW format, but also in uncompressed – 14-bit – so we can extract quite a lot from them in later post-production. One noticeable drawback when shooting is the apparent delay between pressing the shutter and taking the picture. This does not happen quickly, and the camera also records the image a little longer than it should.
Finally, the movie mode is rich
In many cases, Canon cameras lost to the competition in terms of film capabilities. Especially the cheaper ones. Fortunately, the G7X Mark III has changed, because the camera is mainly dedicated to filmmakers . Unfortunately, one basic thing has not changed: we can still shoot either with automatic settings or fully manual. Priority modes are still not available when shooting, which I don't understand. Fortunately, the camera does not differ from the competition standards in terms of film resolution and frame rate. In Full HD, we can shoot not only at 50 fps, but also 100 fps in slow-motion mode. Unfortunately, the restriction is the fact that this mode does not work, including autofocus. The camera also offers 4K 25p mode and can shoot time-lapse movies . So there is a whole set needed by a vloger, and this is the most important thing. No flat profiles or 14-bit recording are not needed here, because this camera is not to please professional filmmakers, but rather half-amateur. Image in Full HD quality is not "sharp as a razor blade", so more demanding users would not be satisfied. But in 4K it is possible to record quite nice materials. An interesting option is also the HDR movie mode , which in theory is to ensure a wider tonal dynamics of movies. In practice, however, I do not notice too much difference between this mode and the traditional one. Servo AF is active while filming, which is continuous autofocus, which is decent enough to sharpen vlog material relatively quickly. However, it doesn't work as fast as in more expensive competition models – AF needs a moment to deal with focusing. A definite advantage of the camera is matrix stabilization, which is especially useful when filming, and works really great. Her strength is 4EV and I'm surprised that the compact can offer such stable shots. This is very important when shooting vlogs, when we walk with the camera and hold it in our hands. Walking with this compact slowly and carefully enough we can even get the effect as if we were using a gimbal.
Summary and evaluation
Canon Powershot G7X Mark III is a compact that is really worth having. For vlogger it is even a perfect model that offers a variety of movie modes, great stabilization, wireless connectivity with the ability to broadcast material on YouTube and a microphone input, which is rare in compacts. The camera will also work on the go, as a universal tool for taking nice pictures and filming. It is small, stylish and comfortable to use. The effects it allows to achieve a positive surprise. Certain shortcomings, for example in movie mode, can be forgiven given the uses for which it was created. If we consider it not as a camera for filming, but for vlogging, then in this category it is one of the best models on the market. That is why we get our editorial "Good purchase" award. [Show_rating]
