Sony is developing its series of advanced APS-C mirrorless cameras. The Sony A6100 and Sony A6600 will be available soon. Both models will offer great opportunities for both photographers and filmmakers.

The end of vacation is full of photographic premieres. Sony comes in with very interesting debuts. Today we officially met two new models. The Sony A6100 will become the simplest model in the mirrorless series, while the Sony A6600 is the successor to the recognized A6500. This means that at the moment the A6 series … has as many as 6 models. Although probably soon some of them will be withdrawn from production and sale.

The most important features

  • 24.2 Mpix APS-C matrix
  • AF 425 points
  • The screen tilts 180 degrees
  • 5-axis matrix stabilization on the A6600
  • A6600 reinforced battery

Cameras for special tasks

Sony A6100 is a less advanced model of the two presented, but it received the same 24.2-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor as its more expensive brother. The α6600 and α6100 cameras are equipped with a very fast AF system, focusing in 0.02 seconds, so 4 times faster than the Panasonic Lumix S1H presented yesterday. 425 phase-detecting phase detection AF fields cover about 84% of the imaging area.

They are complemented by 425 contrast detection AF points. Thanks to the dense coverage of a large area, the AF system works reliably even in adverse lighting. Both models have eye tracking.

More possibilities and better colors

Many users complain about the slightly earthy skin tone on Sony models. The manufacturer guarantees that in new models he managed to combat this problem and new cameras ensure natural color reproduction. Also new is the internal recording of 4K high-definition movies: individual reading of all pixels in Super 35mm mode and sending recordings to a smartphone using the Imaging Edge Mobile application.

The new models do not lack time-lapse animation mode, allowing the creation of timelapse movies. This mode has already appeared, among others on Sony A6400. As in this model, the screen in new cameras is tilted 180 degrees. The manufacturer also boasts that he managed to further reduce the digital noise resulting from the use of higher ISO values. Already in previous models the results at high ISO were great, so if it is even better then the manufacturer will deserve great recognition. a6100 Users will certainly be pleased that a new battery will appear in the A6600, which will significantly extend the time of work on a single charge – it will allow the user to take up to 720 photos. It is important because, as in the Sony A6500 model, also here the matrix will be stabilized in five axes, and this significantly increases energy consumption. The A6600 body is equipped with an internal 4K movie recording function. In the Super 35mm mode, it individually reads all the pixels of the matrix, as a result of which the camera records about 2.4x more data than needed to generate a 4K image (this also applies to the α6100 model).

Redundant data allow to obtain an extraordinary image, saved in high resolution in XAVC S format. To enable fast creation of HDR materials, the camera is equipped with an HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) image profile. Movies recorded with it can be viewed without correction on an HDR (HLG) compatible TV .

Prices and availability

Both new models are expected to be available in October this year. We will pay 830 pounds for Sony A6100, which is almost 4 thousand. zł. A lot, considering that it will be the least advanced model. Sony A6600 was priced much more expensive, for which we would pay 1450 pounds, or almost 7 thousand. zł.
