We test the Sony A6400 bezluster . We check what photos he takes and shoot films. Is it worth spending 4,000 on this camera? zł? About this in our review.
The Sony A6400 is more of an evolution than a revolution. The change from the predecessor is only a few, but noticeable. What are they and are they worth paying extra? These are some of the issues we reviewed in our Sony A6400 review .
The housing is virtually unchanged
Only a truly trained eye will notice the changes on the housing relative to the A6300, because these are really cosmetic: the icon dustpan was moved from the housing to the button, and the side flap is slightly differently contoured. The user, however, will not notice many changes, and the weight, as well as the entire profiling of the body, remain the same – with all its advantages and disadvantages. On the side of the former, you can write that the body is made solid – it is made of a magnesium, rough material, not an ordinary plastic. All this makes the camera easy to scratch or touch, and does not slip in the palm of your hand. Unfortunately, it is still a small body that does not provide such ergonomics as a larger body. Grip is distinguished from the body, but still does not give a very good grip , so the camera is safer to hold with both hands or wear a strap around the neck. I miss one extra knob definitely. In addition, with modes we have one more on top and one in the front part of the body – with their help we can control the selected parameters. Also important is the presence of the AF switch, which is often useful and the Fn button, which ultimately launches a shortened menu, which is very important, because it will come to us quite often. There are also C1 and C2 buttons available, which can be assigned to the designated functions. The movie button is still on the right side, which is not the most convenient option. However, the REC function can be assigned to a shutter or a button that is inside the dial at the front of the case. The visible change took place on the mode dial. Instead of modes 1 and 2, allowing you to save your own settings, we now have one – MR. S & Q mode has also appeared , allowing you to quickly switch to slow-motion and timelapse movies. Until now, to switch to slow-motion, we had to press the Fn button first and select the appropriate mode. The new solution is much faster and easier. This is where the noticeable changes end. On the left side you will find a microphone, HDMI and USB – both in the micro version. The first one will allow you to connect the camera to the computer, but also to charge the equipment. The second can be used, for example to connect an external screen. The capacity of the battery has not changed – it is still 1080 mAh, not too much. It's worth getting some extra batteries, which are quite cheap. One charge is enough for just over 400 photos – with the most optimistic scenario. It seems to me, however, that the camera on a single charge works a bit shorter than it did in the case of the A6300. Which is surprising, because there is nothing that can draw more energy. I also recommend using the airplane mode , which slightly increases the working time. The camera also has all wireless communication systems, and therefore WiFi with NFC and Bluetooth – in the 4.1 standard. Thanks to the Play Memories application, we will be able to control the camera wirelessly or, for example, from the gimbal level.
The screen has gained touch
One of the few flaws of the A6300 has been recognized by the lack of a touch screen. There is nothing to hide – this is very useful. The ability to quickly set the focus point with your finger is useful not only in photography, but also in the movie. Luckily, the A6400 comes with a screen that supports touch. However, in order not to be too rosy, the possibilities of touch are limited, as well as in the most expensive models of the producer. We set the focus point with touch, but we do not serve the menu anymore. It's a pity, because such a possibility would be very useful. The screen resolution , which is still 921 thousand, has not changed . points. The producer also decided to improve the tilting screen, which can now be tilted 180 degrees – this option was lacking, now the camera is ideally suited for vlogging. The casing, which catches the screen, makes a strong impression on the casing, however the manufacturer has created a construction in a clever way, thanks to which the screen can be moved far away from the casing and thus give a full range of movement by 180 degrees, even with a protruding visor. If you already have a viewfinder, this offers a resolution of 2.359 million points and, for a small construction, it is quite well contoured, so the eyecup is used reasonably conveniently. However, the refresh rate could be slightly higher. The menu has also changed, which is now the same as in all newer camera devices from Sony A9. It is significantly expanded, because the camera offers many options – for the autofocus we have several settings. A big plus, however, is the menu section marked with an asterisk, in which we can put the most frequently used items by us and have quick access to them.
Autofocus is a world leader
The fact that the Sony mirrorless cameras from APS-C are making nice pictures is already known by the predecessor. In this respect, we will not see many changes. This camera can just take good pictures. The automatic white balance works well but works a little better than in A6300. The detail of the photos and their tonal range are at a high level. I really like the colors of grass and sky that the camera can achieve. Especially during sunny weather you can count on vivid and nice photos. The colors of the skin are slightly worse – in terms of skintons, the number one is still Canon. The colors offered by Sony seem a bit 'earthy'. Of course, the right presets in processing should fix it. The camera does well with high ISO – of course for the APS-C matrix. In film mode, you can use ISO 3200 with no fear (at 4K even higher). In the case of photographs, there should be no problems with ISO 6400. The maximum ISO value is 102,400, although the image in this case is almost invisible by the noise. On the other hand, the shots from ISO 51 200 could probably be partially saved in post-production.The strongest side of the film mode is without doubt autofocus. This one has 425 fields with phase / contrast detection and works great. Already the A6300 was in the lead in this respect, here the action of AF is even better. The camera is great for street photography, because you can do it in the style of "run and gun", i.e. quickly aim and snap straight without stopping. In the vast majority of cases, such recorded staff will be properly sharpened. Autofocus detects the eye, both human and animal – thanks to this function we can be sure that the pictures we take – human or animal – will have sharp faces, meaning the most important. The AF system also performs well after dark, which is a noteworthy fact, because many cameras after dark, speaking colloquially, excites. Below are some examples taken with the camera. 4K movie mode and new possibilities
Undoubtedly, the A6400, like its predecessor, will be eagerly chosen by filmmakers. It has almost everything you need to shoot good material. Movie mode 4K 25p, slow-motion Full HD 100p mode, film profiles, including S-Log, peaking, zebra, semi-automatic modes. A novelty is the previously absent and useful mode – timelapse. We do not have to do timelapse from photos anymore, because it's enough to make the material with a reduced, selected by us, the number of frames per second. In this way, we get timelapse from the camera – there is no need to speed up the image in post-production, or combine hundreds or thousands of photos – which took the place on the card. The change is also that the producer almost completely abandoned the AVCHD format, in return offering Full HD in the XAVC S format with 25 Mbps or 50 Mbps bitrate . The quality of movies in Full HD is not as good as in the case of full frame, but when we record a picture in 4K, and we render it in Full HD, we can count on really high quality. Fortunately, the camera does not overheat as fast in 4K mode as its predecessor. The only thing I miss from the film angle is the stabilization of the matrix. This can be found in the A6500 model, and certainly would be useful to be able to film from the hand even when we do not have lenses with stabilization. Panasonic offers 5-axis stabilization even in cheaper models, in the case of Sony, unfortunately we have to pay a little extra for it.
Summary and evaluation
Sony A6400 is somewhat doomed to success . This is a continuation of a great series that has earned a reputation over the past few years. All you need is that Sony will finish production of the A6300, because then everyone will have to buy his successor. However, if the A6300 will be produced in parallel in the near future, then the purchase of its successor will be more serious. The A6400 is undoubtedly a great camera . It offers a much better autofocus, slightly modified movie mode, timelapse mode, a touch screen and a 180-degree screen. There are several changes and they are noticeable. Only that we have to pay PLN 1500 for it . Is it better to spend this amount on the lens? I leave the answer to you. Ultimately, however, the camera still receives the "Good Purchase" award from us, because it undoubtedly belongs to it. [Show_rating]
