How to film weddings? How much do you need to spend on wedding equipment? Which lenses work best? These are just some of the questions we asked a few selected professionals in the industry. Among them: Grupa Prywatni, GreenArt Studio and ProStudio. Here are the answers they gave in the photoManiaKa interview.
The time when the wedding film was shot with one large camera and lasted three hours is slowly going away. Modern wedding films are dynamic and modern productions. Curly music video, with lots of equipment that can be found on professional film sets. Creating such films requires considerable skill. If the film is your passion, but still not a profession, the wedding industry is the best gateway to the world of professional films. And thus, only a step further to the plans of commercials, relations from events or plots. Although there are some who stay in the industry because they just like it. Are you wondering whether to enter the wedding films industry? If so, you will certainly be interested in how the best work. I asked wedding photographers whose materials are very popular for the wedding work, what equipment is worth having and how much money should I have to start. My questions are answered by: Kamil Olszowy from the Objectiv Group, Marek Piguła from GreenArt Studio and Marcin Zakrzewski from ProStudio.
How much should you spend to start with to start the adventure with filming weddings?
Kamil Olszowy, Grupa Objectives: I happen to observe boys who start their adventure with filming weddings. I noticed that all their attention is focused on investing in expensive equipment … and yet this is not the most important thing. Before you start selling your services, it is worth considering how my product should stand out from the competition. Sometimes too much equipment overwhelms … interferes with what is most important – in searching for fleeting gestures and emotions. Marek Piguła, GreenArt Studio: If you want to start an adventure with filming weddings, you need to have around 4,000. Golden. Of course, such a startup does not provide equipment for complicated projects. However, it is not the equipment that makes the film, but the talent and knowledge of the operator and editor. Marcin Zakrzewski, ProStudio: For me, at the beginning, about 10,000 are enough. zł. Marcin is right. 😉 In our guide we wrote, what equipment to film weddings up to 10,000 zł?
Without what you can not do at work? What do you need to bring with you on your behalf?
KO: The most important thing for me is the equipment that directly captures a great picture and sound. Therefore, my Panasonic Gh5 and sound recorder, along with a set of tiered microphones, always have the highest priority. MP: On the order we always take a tripod and a monopod. The rest of the accessories are just an option. MK: I always take a monopod with me.
What are your favorite lenses, without which you can not imagine working at a wedding?
KO: I value 16-135 mm and 70-200 mm canons. MP: My favorite lens will always be the classic 50mm with bright light. In addition, I like to work with long focal lengths, for example a 70-200 mm f / 2.8 lens. However, the wide angle is up to 24 mm. MK: The two most commonly used glasses are 35 mm and 100 mm.
The camera you're filming is …
KO: I am using the previously mentioned GH5. I decided that mobility and discretion are the most important in my work – this equipment guarantees it to me. MP: I 've been shooting the Canon system for years. Currently Canon EOS R. Fabulous colors, easy post-production and handling of this armored equipment make it irreplaceable, despite the fashion for other companies' systems. MK: Sony A7s or newer Sony A7 III. The best reporter equipment in relation to the price that can be found on the market today.
What does your wedding day look like – where do you start, what are you filming and what are you giving up?
KO: We start the work with filming the make-up (we abandon the hairdresser). However, we really choose events that are worth being immortalized visually. MP: I start the day with greeting the main characters and people who will accompany us. In this way, people get accustomed to us and become more open. It is obvious that the Bride and Groom are important … but it is also important for us the atmosphere and climate that is created that day.
Do you work alone or in a duet?
KO: In the vast majority I work with a second operator. Thanks to the presence of two people, we can share responsibilities. One person can record a document that tells the right story, while the other person can focus on slightly more bold shots that will significantly enrich the whole. MP: Most often we work in a duo to have shots of the same event from several perspectives. It is not a black magic, only a normal procedure in the profession of a filmmaker, not just a wedding. Bigger team – better effect. With two bodies, however, I am able to record the wedding myself. It is a matter of working methodology and experience. MK: Always in a duet and everyone is responsible for other things, such as drone, details, voice recording, creative staff and the like.
What is your recipe for a successful wedding video?
KO: In my movies, I put on a narrative. I think that they make my films different from others. The time limits in which I feel good are 30-35 minutes. It gives the possibility of a greater selection of shots and a sense that I will run the story comprehensively. MP: The recipe for a successful wedding video is the same as for every audiovisual work. We build fast dramaturgy, we cut off longevity, we take care of the beauty of the frame. We choose the right music to build the atmosphere and it was not for "one hoof". In addition, we introduce the classic introduction, development, ending and color the material with verbalized inserts. As a rule , we do not exceed 35 minutes in the report. MK : A lot of narration and the existing atmosphere, which is the essence of reportage, thanks to which the film becomes personal and more valuable over the years.
How do you remember your first order?
KO: When thinking about the beginnings, the first orders come to mind, in which I recorded everything and everyone. At that time I did not think about what my product should look like. I had flip-flops that made most of my movements thoughtless. MP: I got my first order in 2002 and it was a cousin favor. I worked as a novice operator at a local TV station and a colleague journalist invited me as a guest for my wedding, asking me to immortalize a few scenes . I did it with a very simple handycam, and for the service I received a lot of fun and PLN 200. The film appealed to the audience, and subsequent inquiries began to appear from external clients. After a few years, I realized that I am no longer able to reconcile the work of the TV and wedding operator. So I quit my job for my own company, i.e. GreenArt Studio. MK: It was so long ago that I do not remember … It certainly was a big collision with reality for me. I did not realize how much the wedding operator must know about film, light and sound. How fast he must move on the reportage and react to situations in order to capture the moment.
The biggest setback you passed during the wedding …
MP: I got the biggest hit so far in 2009, when I misinterpreted the contract and … I did not go to the place where the civil ceremony was carried out . I just came to the wedding, though I wondered if it made any sense. Another drastic patch was to forget the backpack with the equipment, which I discovered only on the way to the wedding. I was rescuing myself with a quick rental, because all happiness was happening in a large provincial city. MK: In my opinion, the biggest mistake was to agree to everything that Para offers. Over time, I know that Steaming needs to be prompted, because the lack of suggestion from the filmmaker or photographer unfortunately can be associated with a big problem in reportage. A couple, taking their first wedding, does not know what could happen during the day, which can result in a lot of things going wrong, temporarily slipping down and failing to record important elements.
What can you do to someone who has the first order ahead of him?
KO: Think exactly which form of the movie makes you the most fun. Consider whether it is your priority to go abroad or work in the country. Think about whether you prefer a large amount of narrative, or rather focus on the image. Define your style and open to a client who thinks exactly how you are. MP: Watch everything that may seem important to you from the point of view of the clients and think about what you would like to have immortalized in the film from such an event. Then try to get the most out of it and, above all, keep calm and keep doing it even if something does not work out. MK: At the beginning, it is necessary to clarify the purpose, what I want to achieve and at what time, it should be very consistent. Look for your path and style, inspire yourself, but do not copy. Be ambitious and committed. Shape your vision into a movie, practice the workshop and pay no attention to others who have better equipment or are longer in the industry. Everything is created in a creative mind, and equipment is only a tool in the hands of the artist.
