Canon EOS RP is a low-priced mirrorless camera with full frame. We check whether the camera can meet the expectations of professional photographers and whether it is worth to change it from a Canon camera.
Canon EOS RP debuted two months ago and it turned out to be quite a surprise. The producer created a poorer version of the EOS R model. In this madness, however, there is a method. EOS RP is currently one of the cheapest full-frame mirrorless cameras on the market – you can get it for 6000 PLN in a set with an adapter that allows you to attach lenses to Canon SLRs. The price is therefore very attractive. It's time to check how the camera falls for photos and videos.
The camera is great in your hand
The housing of the new model is roughly similar to the EOS R body. It's a decisive advantage, because the camera is really great in the hand, which is not so obvious in the case of mirrorless competition. The equipment looks like a Canon SLR camera. A large part of the body is covered with rubber and a rough plastic feel. This in combination with a well profiled grip provides a stable and comfortable grip , so that the camera works well even for many hours. The layout of the buttons on the casing has been arranged in a sensible way, although we will find a lot of differences with respect to the more expensive model. Above all, the classic mode dial has returned , which I think is the right decision. The dial, in addition to selecting P, A, S, M modes, also allows you to save three profiles created by the user . A new feature is the B mode, thanks to which the exposure is continuous with the shutter release pressed down. Such a solution will prove useful, for example at cold fires. There is also an Fv mode set to modify the exposure compensation. There is room for two knobs on the upper part of the case that will allow you to control the display. One of them can be locked using the lever. There was also a REC button and one function button. It should be added that the system lenses have an additional dial, which, after the appropriate setting, can also be used to set some camera values. Custom, the knob to turn on the camera the manufacturer placed on the left , which I often forgot – I'm used to the fact that the switch is on the right. The front part of the body is standard buttons for menu operation or image preview. Their layout is very similar to what we know from the manufacturer's SLRs. Although here again a small change, because also the button activating the menu was placed in the upper left corner. Some solutions can be attached to some solutions, because they are not very instinctive . On the left side you will find the entire input package, including HDMI type C and USB type C for fast file transfer. There was also a microphone and headphone connector as well as a cable entry. It should be added that the body is very light – it weighs about 485 grams with the battery and does not weigh in the hand, and in many cases the systemic glass is heavier than it. After unscrewing the lens, we can notice the difference with the more expensive model, in which the shutter covered the matrix, protecting it from getting pollen. Here, the matrix is exposed , as in the rest of the models available on the market. The camera has a microdermine cleaning system that should help in getting rid of pollen. The battery and memory card are located in one slot in the lower part of the body (EOS R for a change has a separate card slot). Such a solution has the disadvantage that when the camera is mounted on a tripod, we first have to take photos of it and then replace the card. The battery itself is relatively small. The camera uses a battery LP-E17, also used in manufacturer's SLR cameras. The difference, however, is that SLRs consume much less energy. Effect? The battery is one of the weakest pages of this model. Fully charged allows you to take about 250 photos , while some models of the competition already offer twice the better result. The camera does not run out of wireless communication in the form of WiFi – we can in this way send images to the smartphone, as well as, with the help of a special application, control the camera remotely. There is no Bluetooth module, which is becoming more common in recent times.
Screen tilted to the side
EOS RP uses a similar solution as most EOS – the screen is tilted to the side, 180 degrees forward and 90 degrees down, so it works in an impressive range of 270 degrees and. However, this solution also has disadvantages. A tilted screen makes it difficult to attach, for example, a microphone that will be hooked on it. The display is standard sizes, and therefore 3-inch, with a resolution of 1.040 million points . It does not go beyond the market average, but it is sufficient for convenient use, because the vividness of the frame and the reproduction of colors are satisfactory. You can not complain about brightness, which can be adjusted in a 7-degree range. The 0,39-inch OLED electronic viewfinder is very good. It has a resolution of 2.360 million points and provides a really good quality image preview. First of all, the viewfinder reflects the colors well, which is especially important. The eyecup might have been slightly better profiled, but it is still large enough and slightly protrudes from the body to be used in a comfortable way.The screen supports touch and is not limited to selecting the focus point . You can also touch the camera with the touch. We serve both the entire menu and shortened settings. When using the panel, icons appear on the screen – among others, with exposure adjustment or ISO value. After touching, we can set the value that interests us. In the upper corner there is the Q icon. After pressing it, you get access to the short menu, in which you set the AF mode, white balance, image style, format, image quality and serial mode. This solution will appeal especially to those who are accustomed to touch panels – traditionalists will be less satisfied because the number of buttons is limited. The camera menu is practically the same as in all other models of the manufacturer. In this respect, Canon has not introduced many changes for years – colors and design with little change have been maintained for more than 10 years, while the layout itself resembles the one introduced already in models from five years ago. So we have the mode of setting the shooting, preview, camera, the mode in which we set the function keys and the mode marked with an asterisk, to which you can add the most frequently used items from the menu, so that you can have quick access to them if necessary.
The quality of the photos does not disappoint
The device is equipped with a full frame matrix supported by the DIGIC 8 processor, which – and here the most important – does not give way to the older kettle. In short, this means that the quality of the photos is as good as in the more expensive model that I praised Canon EOS R test. A full-frame matrix with a resolution of 26.2 megapixels in the EOS of the Republic of Poland performs excellently. You can have many objections to Canon, but you have to admit one thing – this producer copes well with color reproduction. Pictures taken with the camera are characterized by a very nice colors and natural reproduction of human skin colors . It means that in the initial colors of photos straight from the camera they look good, so in the case of, for example, tours, where we take a lot of photos, sometimes we will go without having to process them. A full-frame matrix made by Canon ensures high detail of images, even though it has not been deprived of a low-pass filter. The tonal dynamics of the photos are also high, although in my opinion the models from Sony look better in this respect. However, this does not change the fact that all staff made with Canon EOS RP meet the requirements for professional pictures. Files saved as 14-bit uncompressed images give the photographer a lot of space for later processing and it can be clearly stated that the camera is suitable for professional use. The ISO sensitivity range for the new matrix is 100-25 600 with the possibility of extending to 102 400. It is quite a wide range. The fact is that Canon does not do well with noise like its competitors from Sony. Certainly, however, it is much better than in the manufacturer's machines with the APS-C matrix . So the model is not a king of darkness, like the A7S, but when moving in the basic and not expanded, we can raise the ISO to a value of several thousand without much concern. In turn, values in the range of 40-50 thousand. they can be useful when we take photos in RAW and we will denim them later in the graphic program. The camera has slightly worse autofocus than EOS R, which reigns in this field, but it is still one of the best units on the market. Focus system Dual Pixel CMOS AF by up to 4779 points. There is no doubt that AF is one of the strongest points of this camera. Although it looks a bit worse on paper than in a more expensive model, you can not see it during normal use. Mirrorless lightning blades instantly and quickly, the item tracking mode is also great. I think everyone will be happy with it. The camera had some problems with adjusting the proper white balance with incandescent light. Fortunately, the model also offers AWB mode with white color priority, which is ideal for such conditions and gives a natural image without the dominant yellow color, even in adverse conditions. Unfortunately, many people can not count on those who care about the speed of the photos. The serial mode offers only 5 frames per second or 4 with autofocus in continuous mode . People who care about sports photography must therefore look for something else. Below are a few examples of photos taken with the camera. Full resolution can be found in the gallery .
4K movie mode and its limitations
Fortunately, the time has come to an end when Canon not only did not offer 4K mode, but in Full HD the frame was limited to 25 fps. EOS RP offers the Full HD 50p and 4K 25p film mode , so it gives the user the minimum necessary today. Still, I'm far from optimistic. Like the more expensive model, this camera also quite "crops" the image recorded in 4K, because it is not read from the entire matrix. So we have a 1.6x image magnification , which makes each lens have an artificially extended focal length. While in the photographic mode we can choose the option of taking a picture with a crop to extend the focal length (which is a useful function), in the 4K movie mode the user is placed before a fait accompli. I also missed some slow-motion mode, which has recently become very fashionable and offers many cheaper models. Another disadvantage surprises me a bit. In the EOS R model, the producer finally gave the possibility of filming in semi-automatic modes, P, A, S. It pleased me, though I wondered why it was so late. However, it was clear to me that now every new model will offer such an opportunity. Meanwhile, in this model again we can choose either filming fully manual, or fully automatic. It is a pity that the manufacturer takes us so obvious options. What's new is the HDR mode, operating in Full HD 25p. With its help, we can record movies with a wider dynamic range. It is difficult for me to determine if this mode gives much, but indeed, the material recorded with its use looks quite good. However, the possibility of obtaining greater dynamics is also influenced by the use of a flat profile, especially a logarithmic profile, and in this model, unfortunately, we do not experience this. In conclusion, in the film mode the camera gives us all the basic options, but at the same time does not spoil us too much.
Summary and evaluation
Canon EOS EP will undoubtedly find a place in the summary of the most interesting prime minister this year . While EOS R was a bit disappointing, this camera, despite being a poorer version, is doing very well. It's all thanks to the price. We get a budget model with a full frame sensor. The user gets a good camera, which fits perfectly in the hand, offers high-quality photos and fast autofocus – these are the advantages that many photographers need. Especially those who have used previously worn-out SLRs from a Japanese manufacturer. For them, this model can become a perfect excuse to change something new and better. The investment is not big. Taking into account the price of the camera – 6000 PLN for the body , after selling the old SLR camera you do not have to pay extra and you can enjoy new equipment. Especially that with the help of the included adapter, you can use old glasses that work with the new camera without any problems. Certainly, EOS RP has certain limitations – slow serial mode, lack of matrix stabilization and poor film mode (it is a mirrorless photographer, not a filmmaker). All these disadvantages, however, can be forgiven, because the camera still gives quite a lot, for the money. And opens a new product category: full-frame entry-level mirrorless cameras. Without any doubt, we give him the redaction award "Good purchase". [Show_rating]
