Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 is a superzoom with a relatively bright lens, a 1-inch matrix with 5-axis stablilization and a 4K movie mode. How does the camera compare with the competition?
As many as 5 years we had to wait for the second generation LUMIX FZ1000, which was presented in 2014. In total, I wonder why the manufacturer decided to return to this model. Maybe the other one still sells quite well? The LUMIX FZ1000 II is nothing like updating an old camera. The manufacturer adds a few options that in recent years appear in each of its models, but also does not apply big changes here.
The most important features
- 1-inch matrix MOS 20.1 Mpix
- Objective 25-400 mm, f / 2.8-4
- Serial mode 12 fps
- 5-axis stabilization
- Touch and tilt screen
- Movie mode 4K 30p and slow-motion Full HD
Long lens and 5-axis matrix
The camera uses a 1-inch matrix characteristic of advanced compacts. The advantage of the model is also the lens , which is really long – 25-400 mm in full frame. This is quite a lot, it gives us considerable scope of work. Fortunately, the decent brightness goes along with the length, which is variable and amounts to f / 2.8-4.With this aperture and 1-inch sensor, it is possible to take pictures also with slightly worse lighting. Especially that the camera also has a digital noise reduction system. The manufacturer guarantees that the camera should deal even with ISO 12 800 , guaranteeing a relatively clean picture. I have doubts about it, but I will be happy to find out. The matrix has a resolution of 20.1 megapixels and has a 5-axis stabilization , allowing the use of longer exposure times, or film from the hand. The camera does not run well known from other models of the DFD technology manufacturer, which is to provide fast sharpening in automatic mode. Let's hope that the AF system will also cope well at longer focal lengths, because sometimes Panasonic's have a problem with it.
Touch screen and 4K movie mode
The camera screen has a touch that is good for handling and can be tilted. The manufacturer also used a new digital viewfinder in OLED technology, which is to be characterized by a much higher quality than in the predecessor. In addition, Panasonic adds a lot of its corporate options, known from many other models. And so the function of 4K Photo, or serial mode 8 Mpix 30 fps, Post Focus, many creative filters, including special Monochrome, giving a wide tonal dynamics. In the regular burst mode, we'll take 12 pictures in a second or 7 with continuous autofocus. The producer also mentions that the image quality is to be improved, among others thanks to the use of many new technologies that will affect the better reproduction of colors in the pictures. For years, Panasonic has been working to make photos look better and it's getting better and better – especially for movies. Since we're already at the movies, we can shoot them in 4K 30p or Full HD slow-motion 120 fps. There was also the possibility of shooting time-lapse movies. So what is needed for amateur filming. Of course, advanced people require a bit more, but even for vloggers these options should be enough. We will make about 440 photos on one charge , and continuous connectivity will be ensured by WiFi and Bluetooth. The manufacturer guarantees that Bluetooth connectivity consumes a minimal amount of energy, while guaranteeing that the camera will be connected without interruption to the smartphone.
Price and availability
The new model will go on sale in April. Its predecessor currently costs about PLN 2,300, so we can expect that the price of the new model may fluctuate at the level of 3 thousand, or exceed this limit. Undoubtedly, we are dealing here with an update which, although interesting, is not significant. In any case, the camera needed to be refurbished, so although from the point of view of the market, FZ1000 II is not anything innovative, it offers much more than its predecessor. The price will certainly decide about the success of the model.
