The equipment for professionals is getting better, and at the same time … cheaper. Panasonic Lumix GH5, GH5S and G9 are three different cameras, but they have one thing in common – they offer great possibilities and are very reasonably priced.
The Polish photographic market is undergoing a major metamorphosis. Until recently, professionals have been skeptical about mirrorless cameras. Professional photographers preferred to stay with DSLRs, the filmmakers put cameras on top of everything. Now this image begins to change. There are increasingly better and cheaper mirrorless cameras. Of course, buying a decent, professional equipment for 2 or 3 thousand zlotys is still a dream, but a little less than 10 thousand zlotys you can get a really decent camera , offering parameters previously reserved exclusively for expensive, flagship devices. It is worth mentioning especially Panasonic mirrorless cameras, whose current offer seems to be unrivaled.
Panasonic Lumix GH5 will replace a professional camera
Panasonic Lumix GH4 enjoys a well-deserved fame up to this day. We can now buy equipment for little money, and it's still doing well. Nevertheless, a real premiere in the photo segment was made by the Lumix GH5 . Although the concept of a camera for filming has been operating on the market for a few years now, with the debut of Lumix GH5 we saw for the first time something better: a camera with the appearance of the camera. In GH5, Panasonic has stuffed everything that professional cameras offer today. There are a lot of movie modes here, including the ability to shoot in 4K quality at 50 frames per second , which is rare today. In Full HD, you can record slow-motion video at up to 180 frames. These two options give us really big opportunities. 50 frames in 4K allow you to slow down the material while maintaining reasonable fluency. 180 frames in Full HD are much more than the usual 120 frames, which most manufacturers offer. It's a professional camera , so it's worth taking a deeper look at its capabilities. Attention is drawn to the very high bitrate of the saved materials. It can be up to 200 Mbps in Full HD or over 400 Mbps in 4K. This ensures greater detail – even if the scene we film is dynamic. https://vimeo.com/198960001 In addition to high resolution and detail in dynamic scenes, GH5 offers something else. It is a very high tonal range of recorded materials. It's an issue that always distinguishes high-end equipment from the amateur one. The materials are saved in 4: 2: 2 format with 10-bit depth, so with higher than usual color sampling. This significantly affects the color dynamics of the image. In short, the colors are perfectly rendered, and the lights and shadows are clearly visible. Anyway, the color of the picture itself is something that many people value very much – Panasonic GH5 really gives a good example of the color of the skin. It is worth mentioning that the image can be saved on an external recorder, thereby removing the same compression and receiving the material in even higher quality. Transmission of already saved materials may take place wirelessly. The fastest WiFi ac and Bluetooth 4.1 standard comes with the help. Last but not least is the fact that the camera has a 30-minute recording limit . This means that we can shoot without worrying that the camera will suddenly turn off the recording at the least appropriate time. The filming itself is very comfortable thanks to the well contoured body. What's more, it shoots well from the hand , because the stability of recordings in this case will provide a 5-axis stabilization matrix. I have no doubts: GH5 is not only a good camera, but above all a great camera . It works well both in studio conditions and in the hands of the vlogger. It's no coincidence that this model is most often used by Krzysztof Gonciarz. Ba, Panasonic GH5 can record professional materials that meet the broadcasting standards required by television. And all this at a price of less than 7,000. zlotys for the body !
Panasonic Lumix GH5S is a great camera for wedding photography
A year after the premiere of GH5, his younger brother Lumix GH5S appeared on the market. However, this is not a completely new camera, but rather a variant of a successful mirrorless. It is intended to simply offer other options. A large part of the specification coincides with GH5, so instead of describing it in detail, let's focus on the differences. The matrix is the basic one. It has been deprived of stabilization and has a slightly lower resolution than in GH5, but it was designed for high sensitivity. It is therefore intended to provide good image quality at a higher ISO . The maximum ISO value in this model is 51 200, so it is twice as high as in GH5. Thanks to new design solutions, the camera is able to achieve much better results at lower light. This has been the domain of Sony cameras so far.Good image quality in low light is not a particularly important attribute when filming in the studio or with artificial lighting. However, not everyone has such conditions. Especially if the camera is used as a filming tool for weddings and weddings . Here, we often deal with dark churches as well as dim lighting in the room. Therefore, it may often be necessary to raise the ISO to a high level. And here GH5S will work reliably. We can also find a difference with GH5 in the film options. We get Cinema 4K mode , so it's like in professional cameras. We will also find it in the regular GH5, except that it offers twice as many frames per second in the new model as 50. The number of frames in Full HD has also increased. We will record slow-motion film in this quality even at 240 fps. https://vimeo.com/251100227 GH5S also has a pre-loaded V-Log profile , for which you have to pay extra in GH5. You can see that although there are not many differences, they are very noticeable. The newer camera perfectly complements the GH5. Both devices will work great, but each one is dedicated to different work conditions. There is still a question of price. Lumix GH5S costs almost 2 thousand. more towards the older brother . A lot? Perhaps, but it is still much less than the amount we will pay for the competitive Sony A7S II.
Panasonic Lumix G9, a universal camera for a professional
So far, I have focused mainly on filmmakers, but the Japanese producer also has a camera that can be successfully called a SLR singer . I am talking about the Lumix G9 mirrorless. When designing this equipment, Panasonic focused on solutions known from SLRs, hence camera operation is very convenient due to the numerous knobs that are on the body. There was also an additional display at the top of the body, which shows the most important information about the exhibition. Focus can be set not only by touch, but also by a special joystick when using the viewfinder. This solution is often used in professional top quality reflex cameras. The camera also has three Custom modes, so that the user can freely personalize it .What will we find inside the camera? First of all, a matrix that has no anti-aliasing filter. Thanks to this, the detail of the photos is exceptionally large. What is equally important, tonal dynamics remains impeccable. Lumix G9 really has nothing to be ashamed about when it comes to quality of photos, even if we combine it with professional top quality SLRs. In serial mode, we can take 12 frames in a second. What's more, thanks to the 6K Photo mode, the camera can take up to 60 frames in 6K quality in one second. In many cases, this resolution will be fully sufficient. The camera combines the high image quality with speed , and that's after all the two features that photographer professionals expect from the camera every day. We also have a great quality digital viewfinder, which has a resolution of 3.680 million points (currently it is difficult to find a unit with equally high parameters on the market). Similarly, the stabilization of the matrix has a magnitude of 6.5 EV. It is also one of the best results on the market today. Like the Panasonic models described above, the Lumix G9 also has two memory card slots , which is now an irreplaceable solution when working on reportages and events or events reports. It will not be a surprise if I write that the Panasonic Lumix G9 meets all the standards that people who live from taking pictures expect. And equally important, it is affordable: we'll buy the corps now for of less than 6,000. PLN ! It is hard to believe given the fact that in terms of capabilities Lumix G9 can easily compete with much more expensive DSLRs. Panasonic Lumix GH5, GH5S and G9 are cameras that can really do a lot in the hands of professionals. And I do not write this, specifying the specifications, but looking at the real performance of each of the models described. Each of the cameras I had the opportunity to test myself . I invite you to read their reviews: I have linked all of them below.
