Today, Nikon officially presented two full-frame mirrorless cameras: Nikon Z6 and Z7. We participated in the official premiere of cameras. Here are our first impressions.
The long-awaited moment has come. Nikon showed two full-frame mirrorless cameras. The manufacturer, which until now practically did not exist on the market of cameras without mirrors, decided to enter it with a repulse. That's why he decided to launch full frame equipment – only Sony now offers. There are two new models – Nikon Z6 and Z7 . One can compete with Sony A7 III, the other with A7R III. Both present themselves very interesting.
The Nikon Z6 offers high speed and high ISO
Nikon Z6 is less advanced with two models. It has a full-frame matrix with a resolution of 24.5 megapixels. ISO can be raised to the maximum level of 51 200, and the whole is supported by the EXPEED 6 processor . The autofocus of this model has been equipped with 293 focus points, and the matrix is mechanically stabilized. Its strength is valued by the producer at around 5 EV – it is a really good result. In serial mode, the camera will take 12 RAW images in a second. A 3.2-inch screen with a resolution of up to 2.1 million points corresponds to the image preview. The very strong point of the camera, however, turns out to be its viewfinder. This offers a 0.8x magnification and a resolution of 3.69 million points. These are some of the highest values on the market. In addition, the design uses the lens known from Nikkor lenses. This all together guarantees the highest possible quality of the preview – and indeed – the screen is simply very good, but the image quality in the viewfinder really arouses admiration. The very ergonomics of both models (their construction is virtually identical) was taken from the manufacturer's SLRs. What follows – we will find, among others, a joystick for setting the focus point. Unfortunately, there is no touch on the screen, so we have to settle for this solution. At the top there is a mode dial and one for setting various photographic values depending on the mode. There was also a top screen with a preview of the most important parameters. This solution is rare in mirrorless cameras – Panasonic has recently used it in the Lumix G9. Overall, however, the knobs and buttons are slightly less than the manufacturer's top SLRs. What may surprise you because it does not compensate for this touch screen. The ergonomics itself is at a high level, the grip is well contoured, and the whole body of considerable size – it feels good in your hand, which will be appreciated by the photojaps working with SLRs every day.
The Nikon Z7 provides high resolution and ultra-fast autofocus
The higher model, the Nikon 7 offers a matrix with a resolution of up to 45.7 Mpix. The EXPEED 6 processor is also used here, but the maximum ISO is slightly lower – it is 21,600. The hybrid AF system is much better – it has as many as 493 focus areas, which is one of the best results on the market. Sharpening takes place instantly, and the camera works quickly even in the 4EV lighting. The speed of the burst mode is slightly lower, at 9 frames per second. However, we must take into account that their resolution is much higher, so the camera must save much larger files. A large part of the specifications in terms of preview as well as ergonomics coincide with the Z6 model. In both models, special attention is paid to very large – even for a full frame – fixing. The manufacturer explains this by the fact that thanks to the extension of the clamping he could simultaneously provide smaller dimensions while maintaining high quality. We can only write about the quality of the pictures taken that at first glance it looks really great. But that's it, because for now the manufacturer did not give the opportunity to take it test shots. At the same time, I must add that I would not do it anyway without borrowing the card. It turns out that Nikon uses very non-standard XQD cards. It seems that only such carriers meet the speed standards required by the camera. Unfortunately, many people may consider this solution a minus, because such cards are slightly more expensive and harder to access than standard SD cards. In addition, it may come as a surprise that there is only one entry for cards. For many photographers it will be a big minus. In the next year, however, a new type of cards will appear and after updating the firmware you will be able to use them as well.
Both cameras film in 4K
Z6 and Z7 are also an attempt to enter Nikon into the world of film cameras. In both cases, the autofocus works very fast and smoothly in a continuous mode. The stabilization of the 5 EV matrix will guarantee stable shots and should work with the stabilization in the lenses – at least this was ensured at the Polish show, because there is information on the network that, unfortunately, it does not work like this.We will be able to film in 4K resolution at 30fps and Full HD with up to 120fps. These are currently standard values. The camera also has a logarithmic N-Log profile, and there are also 20 color profiles that can be used in both photos and movies. The filming will also help focus peaking, when we want to sharpen by hand, as well as a zebra, informing about x-rays or timecodes helping in synchronizing the image with the sound. We will be able to record uncompressed 8-bit material on an external recorder, so the output image quality can be really high. Of course, there was an external microphone entry. And if we are already in communication – both models offer HDMI and USB version C, while wireless connectivity provides Bluetooth version 4.2 and WiFi in the ac standard.
Price Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7
New cameras for sale will go in the autumn. Z7 on store shelves is expected to appear at the end of September, and Z6 at the end of November. For the first one, we will pay 16 999 for a body with an adapter for Nikon lenses. The version with the kit 24-70 mm f / 4 was priced at PLN 18 999. We will buy the cheaper Z6 for PLN 9999 in the version with the adapter and for 12,999 with the putty. Prices – as you can see – are very close to what Sony offers. It is difficult to judge whether the cameras will achieve great success. Certainly the specification of both is very strong. But on the other hand it does not beat what Sony offers. The success will definitely be decided by the quality of the photos, as well as the price of the greenhouse, because in this respect, Sony is not cheap at all. And of course the fact that many photographers will be easier to change from a Nikon reflex camera to a mirrorless one than a completely new Sony system.Nikon's strength can be just a greenhouse. In addition to the three glasses available this year, several more to be added over the next two years. In addition, we get an adapter at the entrance to the camera. This can tempt many Nikon users who have invested thousands in the lens of this manufacturer. We will probably see how the cameras perform in a few weeks when they reach our editorial office. Then we will share with you more detailed thoughts.
