We test the Panasonic Lumix GX9 bezel . We check how it falls on the background of its predecessor and whether it will fulfill its role as a compact camera for a professional photographer.
Panasonic Lumix GX9 is the successor of the Lumix GX8. The differences with the predecessor are considerable, because this year's camera has gained, among others, a smaller housing and a new matrix. How does this set work in practice? In the Lumix GX9, Panasonic focused on compactness, so we get a much smaller body than in the GX8. The camera fits well in your hand, weighs just over 400 grams and is covered in a large part with rough rubber, which is to facilitate its holding. Grip is slightly less contoured than in the predecessor, but the camera itself looks nice. Maybe he is far from retro stylistics known from Olympus or Fuji, but still looks very stylish. In addition, the casing is made of magnesium, which is to ensure its greater durability and resistance.Simple design and black color give the device a pleasing appearance, there are no fancies. However, the fact of simplicity has no effect on the number of knobs or buttons – those on the housing we find a lot , which makes the camera really convenient to use. On the upper part of the housing, apart from the shutter button and the REC button there is also room for three knobs. The mode dial gives access to the P, A, S, M, Auto, and movie settings, but also the "C" mode, in which we can permanently store your own settings. Around it, we find the exposure compensation knob. In turn, around the shutter button, there is a place for the knob, which can be controlled by a shutter or aperture – depending on the chosen setting. There are a lot of buttons on the front of the camera. First of all, the 3 buttons can play a functional role. In addition, the standard menu buttons are found here, in addition to the autofocus mode switch – it is useful when you want to sharpen an item manually, for example, and you can quickly switch to MF mode. We also have a button that releases the flash, but also another knob with which we can set particular parameters. Overall, camera operation with such a number of buttons and knobs is really comfortable for those who are used to more professional cameras. There was also space for basic inputs, including microphone, HDMI in micro version and micro USB input, thanks to which we will not only send files from the camera, but also charge the camera. In addition, the camera also allows you to connect wirelessly, using the available WiFi module. By using it we will send files without using a cable, but we can also control the camera after installing the appropriate application on our smartphone. There is room for a battery and a memory card in the bottom of the camera. The capacity of the battery itself is characteristic of smaller mirrorless cameras and is 1025 mAh. It is not very little, but in practice it is not enough. We will take about 260 photos on one charge , assuming we use the screen, not a digital viewfinder. This is an average result.
Tilting screen and viewfinder
If we are already talking about the comfort of working with the camera, in this case both the screen and the viewfinder work. The screen is a standard design – 3 inches in size and resolution of 1240 thousand. points give a good preview of the image. The maximum brightness is quite good, so we can use it on a sunny day. An important piece of information is also the fact that the screen has a touch. With its use, we not only set the focus point with your finger, but also handle the entire menu – this is not the case, for example, the latest Sony models. The menu itself is characteristic of the new Lumixes, it does not differ much from other models. We get the menu in the full version and abbreviated. The option is quite a bit and certainly it will take some time for each user to find him in it . In my opinion, Panasonic's cameras are not very easy in terms of menu-level operation. It will be easier and faster to learn how to use Canon or Sony. A few words also belong to the viewfinder. This definitely should be singled out. Not only because of the high resolution of 2.760 million points, because such results are not surprising today. What's great is the possibility of tilting the viewfinder by 80 degrees, which significantly simplifies the work. This solution has often been used in cameras, but it is in vain to look for cameras – which is a pity, because it is very convenient. The eyecup is not very contoured, because it's a small camera and there is no place for madness with a visor, but it is quite pleasant to use. Turns on automatically when we approach the eye and, fortunately, it is not overly sensitive, so it does not fade the screen when we hold the camera a dozen centimeters from the body – such a problem was the bane of some models, for example A7S II.
The new matrix gives better image quality
In the new model, changes have not only occurred in terms of appearance, that is, what is outside, but also inside. The manufacturer used an improved MOS Micro 4/3 matrix, which was devoid of a low-pass filter. This guarantees a greater detail of recorded frames. In addition, the same resolution itself – from 16 to 20 Megapixels . All these solutions have made the pictures noticeably better than in the older model. The detail of the photos is really good, and the tonal range has also improved slightly. It is not perhaps the same level as in professional models, but let's remember that GX9 is a budget model. Despite its not too high price, the camera is aimed at a slightly higher quality shelf, and indeed, after the pictures it can be seen that it is really good. Maybe the GX9 will not be the main camera in the hands of the photographer (this can become the Lumix G9, for example), but as the second camera it will work the most. Testing the GX8 I had the impression that maybe the movies that model was doing good, but in terms of pictures fell out worse. In the case of the new model, I can not attach anything to anything, because the camera really does quite well in this field. In the case of ISO sensitivity, however, we still can not expect outstanding results, because here only the new Lumix GH5S really falls out well, but on the other hand – there is no tragedy. The image is acceptable even at ISO 3200 , and even the images from ISO 6400 could be even drawn out using a moderate noise filter in a suitable machining program. The Canon SLRs, for example, are worse in this matter, despite the fact that they have larger matrices and often higher prices. A summary of the quality for individual ISO values below. The new model definitely performs better with human resources, in which we have a big difference between the lightest and darkest parts. Pictures taken with the use of automatic modes are not so often overexposed or underexposed. The colors of the photos themselves look really good – the sky is nice blue, the colors are vibrant and saturated. The camera also offers a lot of creative filters that allow you to give your staff specific color. I have made a few pictures using them and the effects are very interesting. The quality of the photos generally falls out well. Autofocus performs a bit worse . It gives you many functions to choose from, including the ever-increasing focus on the eye, which is to ensure well-sharpened faces of the photographed people. It also works quite fast, but I still have the impression that this is not the level that Sony has used to get used to. And I do not mean only the top ones, because such comparison would be pointless. But similarly priced Sony A6300 is doing much better. Using Lumix, I dealt with badly sharpened photos when I recorded them quickly at a longer focal length. AF sometimes got lost. in film mode, you can also see noticeably worse results compared to the mentioned A6300. However, to be clear – the AF system works quite well, but my requirements in this respect are considerable and comparing it to models from Sony, I objectively have to say that it performs worse. Below are a few examples of photos. Full resolution cadres – traditionally – can be found in the gallery . We can find a lot of useful functions. In addition to the aforementioned number of creative filters, which we can also modify, we get features known from other models, such as Post Focus or 4K Photo. Using the first one, we can determine what has to be sharp in the picture after taking it. The second one allows you to take pictures in serial mode at 30 frames per second using the electronic shutter. Pictures recorded in this way have a resolution of 4K. In turn, in traditional serial mode, we will take up to 9 photos in a second , but if we do not use a continuous autofocus mode. With him, the maximum number of frames per second is 6 pieces. The camera's matrix is mechanically stabilized in 5 planes, and its strength is up to 4EV. The manufacturer has tried to eliminate microduction caused by the mechanical action of the shutter. In addition, the work of the shutter itself is much quieter, which should also be saved on the plus side. Quiet shutter operation is useful, for example, in street photography.
The film mode is rather standard
Lumiks are known for their large movie mode capabilities and good quality video content. This is not the case for this model. We get here a standard package of film possibilities, characteristic of Panasonic models. So we can register high quality Full HD footage at 50 or 60 frames per second. In 4K quality materials will be recorded at a speed of about 30 frames per second. The quality of films made by Panasonic is always impeccable. The staff are sharp and clear, their detail is at a very high level. They just look just right. In vain look here slow-motion mode, or film profiles, but do not expect too much from the camera for the price. We just get a good quality movie mode, which we can use to record very nice material. Of course, in the film mode we can choose all the parameters ourselves, as well as use modes with aperture or shutter priority. Manual focus will help focus peaking. The 4EV optical stabilization is of good quality . This standard works with stabilization in the manufacturer's lenses, thanks to which in many cases we will go around without a tripod. Of course, in worse lighting the camera looks a bit worse, but that's the domain of Panasonic. And so I think that, despite the smaller matrix, it deals better with this issue than many Canon SLRs.
Summary and evaluation
Panasonic models Lumix GX9 confirms the position of the leader of cameras with a positive price-quality ratio. A little over 3 thousand zlotys for a camera with such possibilities is a reasonable proposition. An improved matrix with a predecessor , better autofocus, smaller sizes – all this speaks in favor of the new model. The camera will guarantee good quality photos and comfortable work, and its small size means that we can take it with you everywhere.Autofocus still does not work very well, although DFD technology significantly improves the situation. High ISO will cause noise, but it can get over – a bright lens and sensible lighting or using the built-in flash will do the job. It is a pity that the housing was out of order and the battery could last a little longer. In general, however, the model is worth recommending. We grant him the "Good Purchase" distinction.
