It debuts Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI – the first camera from the RX100 family equipped with the lens ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T * 24-200 mm F2.8 – F4.5 and the fastest AF on the market.
The popular Cyber-shot RX100 series has a new look. The Sony RX100 VI (DSC-RX100M6) brings some cool (and long-awaited) new features – including a bright, high-zoom lens and an AF system that focuses in just 0.03 seconds!
The short Cyber-shot RX100 VI specification
- ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T * lens 24-200 mm F2.8 – F4.5
- the world's fastest AF system, focusing in 0.03 seconds
- 315 placed in the focal plane, based on the phase detection of AF fields covering about 65% of the frame
- 20.1-megapixel CMOS 1.0M Exmor RS layer image sensor with its own DRAM chip and modernized BIONZ X image processor
- burst speed: up to 24fps with full auto focus / exposure
- Optical image stabilizer that allows you to extend the shutter speed by 4 degrees
- recording of high resolution 4K films with reading of all pixel matrix without combining them into groups and 4K HDR mode enabling fast work with HDR materials.
Large zoom in a small frame
We had the opportunity to test all cameras from the RX100 family, but such a model as the new Mark VI still in the Sony offer was not. The main distinguishing feature of today's premiere is of course the lens. This is the first glass in the family of Japanese compacts, with such a large zoom ratio : ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T * 24-200 mm F2.8 – F4.5. Interestingly, the installation of the new optics has not bounced on the convenience and pocket dimensions that the Sony RX100 line is famous for. In terms of dimensions it is still the same device as the Sony RX100 V – and there the lens worked in the 24-70 mm range! This was achieved thanks to a unique design with two ED glass elements (with very little dispersion) and eight aspherical elements, including four AA (advanced aspherical) lenses. As the producer emphasizes, the combination of all these elements ensures excellent sharpness of the whole frame at every focal length and guarantees the quality of the image from which the RX100 series is known. We will not fail to check, of course, how the equipment will come to us for testing. An important feature is also the presence of Optical SteadyShot image stabilizer , which allows to extend the shutter speed by 4 degrees and prevents blurring of shots in low light or at larger focal lengths.
Powerful Fast Hybrid AF system
The new model is equipped with a 20.1-megapixel , 1-inch Exmor RS CMOS image sensor with its own DRAM memory chip, a modernized BIONZ X image processor and a large-scale integration system that maximizes data processing speed. However, this is not the main argument for buying the first device. The Sony RX100 VI is, above all, an extremely efficient Fast Hybrid AF system . This innovative solution combines the advantages of 315 phase-based detectors, placed in the focal plane of AF points covering about 65% of the frame and the AF system based on contrast detection. This system adjusts focus in just 0.03 seconds – a better result in the world of cameras with a 1.0-type transducer in vain search.RX100 VI is also the first RX100 series camera equipped with High-density Tracking AF technology , which focuses AF fields around the main theme to improve accuracy in tracking and focusing, the user can also take advantage of the popular "AF priority eye" technology, its current version tracks the sharpness about twice as efficiently as in the current RX100 series. On the spot touched on the LCD screen and the touch-sensitive focus area dial, the latter is for people who prefer to choose focus areas by pointing them with their finger, and the user can also shoot at up to 24 fps – full resolution and continuous operation AF / AE – as well as record fil my 4K with reading all pixel matrix without combining them into groups. The equipment of the RX100 VI finally includes a fast shutter that eliminates distortion (with a minimum opening time of 1/32 000 s). It limits the "skew" effect that arises when registering moving objects. When the electronic shutter mode is activated, the camera can operate completely silently – even in high-speed burst mode. A mechanical shutter is also available.
Advanced film capabilities, including 4K HDR
In 4K mode, the new RX100 VI uses all pixels to read without grouping them together. As a result, even the smallest details of the 4K image are recorded with a minimum level of moiré and without jagged edges. New in the Cyber-shot family of devices is compatibility with 4K HDR materials . It is provided by a new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) image profile that enables fast and efficient work with HDR materials. Other professional film features include the S-Log3 gamma curve, S-Gamut3 color space, Full HD 120p mode, image profiles, proxy file recording, etc. The RX100 VI also allows you to record a movie to display in a slow motion. Registration takes place at speeds of 240, 480 or 960 fps.
XGA OLED Tru-Finder with ZEISS T * coating
The XGA OLED Tru-Finder with ZEISS T * coating has a 2.35 million pixel resolution , making it easier to view the recorded or reproduced image faithfully. The user can insert the viewfinder into the housing and, if necessary, activate it immediately at the touch of a button. The RX100 VI is the first in the Sony RX series to have a touch trigger function activated by touching the LCD screen, a zoom lever to adjust the speed of focal length changes and an LCD screen that can be tilted 180 degrees up and 90 degrees down to take pictures from non-standard perspectives. The automatic monitor shutdown function allows you to increase the number of photos taken by up to 30%, and the whole complements compatibility with Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth.
RX100 VI – availability and price
The sale of the new Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI compact camera will start in July this year. The Polish price has not yet been disclosed, but we know that over the ocean we will pay about $ 1,200 for the camera. That's about $ 200 more than the previous generation cost, which can only mean one thing – it will not be cheap …
