We test the Canon EOS M6, the successor to the successful model EOS M5. Does the new camera raise the bar?
By testing the Canon EOS M5, I wrote that this model of Canon has entered the world of mirrors. Previously, the manufacturer had a model without a mirror, but it was very different from the competition. Following the blow, after a successful debut M5, the manufacturer quickly introduced another model – the Canon EOS M6 . In our test we check how far the changes are relative to the predecessor.
Construction and ergonomics
The essential difference compared to the EOS M5 is the lack of viewfinder and flash in the center of the housing . Flash will find, but pop up – this is a solution known from many compacts. These changes make the camera more than the EOS M5 resembles the SLR – the appearance of an older model could be associated with SLR cameras. With this year's equipment maker is clearly going towards retro styling. The housing is almost entirely covered with rubber. The top and bottom are plastic in silver or graphite. Overall the camera looks pretty nice, though in terms of looks far to the Olympus or Fuji models.A big plus is the casing design, which gives a great comfort to the camera . It's about well-shaped grips, but also buttons and knobs. These have been placed close together in one place. Thanks to that, we can handle the camera with one hand. At the top of the body, you will find, among other things, a mode dial, in which, apart from P, A, S, M (here P, Tv, Av, M) and auto or movie modes, we also find C1 and C2 modes, which allow us to remember our favorite settings. The next rotary knobs will allow you to set a shutter speed or aperture, for example, but there is also a very useful manipulator for adjusting the exposure compensation. There was also a button on the top. The front of the camera takes up a large part of the screen, and in addition to that, there are buttons for menu navigation. The advantage is that the menu instead of the arrows, we can also operate the knob . This is a much more convenient solution – especially for a shortened menu. Among the items around the knob, we also find a movie button, which is not the best solution, because it's hard to press when you operate the camera with one hand. As for the quality of workmanship – the plastic beads are not as good as they seem, but they certainly will not provide the same strength as the magnesium case from the more expensive models. The right side of the camera is the place for the HDMI input, the trigger or the microphone, and a button to connect to WiFi. On the left side we will find a button to release the flash. So it is clear that the manufacturer has used every part of the camera's casing and admitted that the camera's operation is very convenient – almost everything can be set without having to enter the menu. The battery and memory card are in the same place as the predecessor, so at the bottom of the case. The battery has a capacity of 1040 mAh, which gives us the ability to do less than 300 pictures on a single charge. The result is average, but the mirrors already have that. Interestingly, the same links are found in the Canon 750D, for example, which will, however, provide a longer working time on a single charge. For the EOS M6 certainly will be a spare battery. The manufacturer has not forgotten about the wireless . The EOS M6 comes with WiFi, and it also supports NFC so you can easily and quickly connect it to your smartphone, for example, so you can wirelessly control your camera. In addition to this, we still have Bluetooth, which can not boast many cameras – the more you praise the manufacturer.
Display and viewfinder
The camera has a 3 inch LCD screen and a resolution of 1.040 million dots . It guarantees good color reproduction and is tilted – but not 180 degrees, as in some luggage, and only about 90 degrees up. Unfortunately, the manufacturer did not care to keep the display completely hidden in the casing, which slightly protrudes. Remember that the screen is touch-sensitive , which is becoming standard today. This makes it much easier to use the camera because it not only makes it easier to navigate the menu, but also set the focus point with your finger on the screen. The menu itself looks almost exactly like all Canon's mirrors and lenses, so it's quite clear and transparent. The options on the menu, however, do not find enough, so we will need some time to get to know him fully. The biggest surprise is that the model has run out of digital viewfinder. In return the manufacturer offers an external viewfinder, which we can mount to a hot shoe. Of course, we will have to pay extra for an additional viewfinder because it is only optional. It's strange because the newer model is very similar to the older one, and the main difference is that there is no viewfinder – but that explains why the EOS M6 is a bit cheaper than the EOS M5.
The camera is equipped with a matrix known from the EOS M5, but also used in the EOS 80D. The 24-megapixel APS-C sensor is backed by a new and powerful DIGIC 7 processor. This gives you photo quality comparable to the EOS 80D, so it's really good. In poor lighting conditions the camera can not cope very well, but there is no tragedy. Sensitivity can be set within ISO 100-25600 in extended mode. We will even make photos with ISO 6400, though a little lightening in Lightroom will be useful. In the case of movies I would not risk going out of ISO 1600, though with this value the noise is noticeable. The tonal range and detail of the photos are on a high level , to which Canon cameras have managed to get accustomed to us. The images are nice, they are saturated, and the automatic white balance in most cases correctly selects colors. Remember that when it comes to focusing, the camera uses Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, which guarantees high accuracy and speed of the AF system. We can select one of the 49 focus points with the finger, and the continuous shooting mode works very well, sharpening quickly and accurately. The AF system can definitely be saved on the plus side . In movie mode we can use the so-called. Servo AF, so the manufacturer calls a system that works well when shooting movies. Below is an example photo gallery. Full resolution photos can be found in the gallery . [Gallery ids = "132784,132786,132788,132790,132792,132794,132796,132798,132894,132,282,132,804,132806"] In burst mode, the camera can take 9 shots per second, but for RAWs, a single burst of images is Only 17 images. So the buffer is small, but the serial mode has never been a strong part of Canon's cameras. However, the presence of 5-axis digital matrix stabilization deserves commendation. This solution is slowly becoming more and more common, but still deserves attention. Thanks to efficient stabilization, we will be able to prolong the exposure time by shooting from the hand. The photographic capabilities of the camera are really good. Of course, some of it is lacking in professional models, but most of the time, the EOS M6 will do a great job of providing nice pictures – well sharpened and exposed, even if we use full automation. The most important problem during the test was, however, the notorious "hangers" of the camera. Model as if he needed a lot of time to save captured images that were not even made in RAW, just like the shot – again cropped, because the camera reported that it is recording. Later, however, I saw that entering the menu itself was already causing a loss of liquidity. Never before in any Canon camera so this situation did not occur, so I assume that this is some defect of the model we received, or a defect that will solve the nearest firmware update.
Once the Canon SLRs started filming with cameras, today Canon is far behind other manufacturers in the field. The EOS M6 gives the minimum necessary, but nothing more. So we get the ability to record Full HD at 50 frames per second . The camera still lacks the ability to shoot in priority mode, we focus on peaking. On the other hand, automatic sharpening, as already mentioned, works very well. The 5-axis digital stabilization also helps with the presence of a 5-axis digital stabilization so that we do not have to use a tripod in many cases, as stable hand-held shots are as possible with this camera. It is difficult to overemphasize the movie mode, because if some Sony or Panasonic models can give them a separate review, we get only what is needed here and nothing else. If you are looking for a camera to shoot, you should definitely look further, because the EOS M6 is not for you. However, if the movie functions are secondary, the camera will give you a pretty good video quality that will work well in automatic mode. And importantly, it will provide sharp and stable shots.
Summary and evaluation
Canon EOS M6 joins the group of successful Japanese manufacturer of mirrors. Only that the new model in fact is little different from the EOS M5 . It has the same matrix, practically the same parameters, and the biggest difference is that it does not have built-in viewfinder, while being slightly cheaper. Why have you introduced a new model that really does not bring anything new? I do not know. It is worth pointing out that all the advantages I wrote about in the EOS M5 review can also be found in the EOS M6. This is a successful model that makes very nice pictures and is comfortable to use. So if you do not care about the viewfinder and you want to pay slightly less than M5 then the MOS EOS M6 will be a good choice. [Temperature2 product_id = "22246"]
