We test the Panasonic Lumix GH5 . Is this the best camera for filming? How does it compare to the competition from Sony at the top? You read this in our GH5 review.
The formulation of the film camera no one is surprised. We have become accustomed to the fact that good equipment is able to shoot not only comparable, but sometimes even better movies than the camera. Models such as the Panasonic Lumix GH5 , which can properly be called a camera with a camera look. Due to the lack of video recording limit, the device officially ceased to be considered a camera. Let's see how the Panasonika camera works in practice.
Construction and ergonomics
It must be said at the outset that it is not a small camera. It's a professional device, so it must have its dimensions – for technological and prosaic reasons. This is where comfort and ergonomics matter. The Panasonic GH5 is bigger than the competing Sony A7 (the latter also "bulky" in the latest generation). With the size of the weight goes – 725 grams is a little, although you can not read this as a drawback. The Panasonic GH5 is great in the palm of your hand and feels very solid. No wonder – the housing is made of magnesium, and a large part of the body was additionally covered with rubber to help hold. The grip itself is really well profiled, so even long-term work with the camera is not a nuisance. There are plenty of buttons on the body, so beginners can take control of the camera. The manufacturer has set all the key functions to be set using the button on the body . And so, at the top we will find two knobs. One to choose between multiple modes – P, A, S, M, auto, movie mode, and three custom modes marked C1, C2 and C3, in which we can set the appropriate parameters to be stored. Another knob is the mode dial for shooting – single shots, burst modes and self-timer. For serial modes we also have 6K Photo here. At the top of the body we also find buttons for setting white balance, ISO and exposure. From the point of view of both photographers and filmmakers this is a very important function, so well that each has received a dedicated button. Also at the top was the movie recording button and looped, which we can set for example aperture in the lens. On the front of the body we will find a button to change the autofocus modes, so to switch between continuous and single AF, or manual mode. We can also use manual focus and autofocus. The interesting thing is that we will also find here a joystick for point- and- point joystick . This is a solution known from SLRs in which there is no touch screen. Here the joystick helps when using the viewfinder – it would be difficult to focus by touching the screen. At the front we find a knob to set the shutter. Another element of this type hit the place of the usual arrows to navigate the menu. This is a much better solution because it allows you to move around the settings faster or for example to select ISO sensitivity values. It's a pity that the knob is relatively loud, while other manufacturers often do not seem to have any sound. In addition to the whole body, the manufacturer has arranged as many as 5 function keys , which we can freely personalize. The viewfinder is firmly on the body, and the use of it is extremely comfortable, but I will write later. The screen is tilted to the side, which is becoming less and less common, and is known even from the predecessor of the model tested, Panasonika GH4. On the left side we find a lot of interesting entrances. In addition to the microphone and headphone (necessary for filmmakers) we still have HDMI, but not the mini and standard. For this, a USB Type C 3.1 . There is also a flash sync socket. On the right side you will find an entry for the trigger hose and two memory card inputs. A very important change with respect to the predecessor is just adding another input to the memory card, which is a big plus. Well below we will find a battery whose size and capacity are large. The last one is 1860 mAh, so it is really good. But do not expect the same results as the SLRs. We will make a little over 400 photos if we use a viewfinder. This result can not be tragic, but far away from the ideal. This does not change the fact that, in terms of power consumption, the camera does much better than Sony's.
Display and menu
The Panasonic GH5 has one of the largest and best quality displays on the market for digital cameras. Its size is 3.2 inches and the resolution is as much as 1.62 million points . Such parameters guarantee good image quality, especially since we are dealing with an OLED display rather than a classic LCD. The images are well-saturated and full of details, and it also shows the actual look of your photos and videos. 0.2 inches in relation to the typical size makes the difference – the display is large and works very well with it. Also on sunny days, because the screen can boast pretty good brightness. The screen is tilted to the side , which is slowly becoming a rarity, but we can tilt it by 180 degrees, which makes the camera useful also in the hands of bloggers. Also note that the panel supports touch. We will not only set the focus point, but also select different menu options or support the main menu. However, the function can not be viewed by moving your finger anywhere – to such solution we got used to smartphones. Here the touch in the menu works so that you can only move the options by touching the screen in place of the slider. The menu itself is very extensive and the settings are segregated accordingly. Depending on the active mode, photo or movie options appear at the top of the menu. In the case of a photographic menu, we will find settings for the metering mode, image quality settings, shutter speed and photo style. For photos and movies style we can choose the same. In addition to the standard options we also find the movie mode V and movie mode D. The second is the most contrast, in any mode, such values as saturation or contrast can be set from -5 to +5. By default, they are set to zero. There are even more options in movie mode and there is no way to replace them all. However, part of that is in the photo menu. In addition, we can choose the quality of the video, what audio input we will use, and video output. The camera has a high-end digital viewfinder. You can boast of a large and well profiled eye shell, which makes use of the viewfinder very comfortable. The viewfinder resolution is as high as 3.680 million points at 0.76x magnification. The image is therefore very sharp and detailed, and the frame coverage is 100%.
In the new model, the Pantera Micro Four Thirds system matrix was devoid of a low-pass filter. This gives you more granularity of your photos. The resolution of the matrix is 20.3 Mpix, which is the standard value in mid-range cameras that are not addressed to professional photographers. Due to the fact that GH5 is dedicated to filmmakers and not to photographers, such resolution in my opinion is sufficiently enough. The small size of the matrix, however, is related to the fact that at higher values noticeable noise becomes. This problem has not been overcome by the manufacturer because it is difficult to systematically circumvent the physical limitations. As a result, we get a nice image only at low ISO values. For the images, the visible noise is already coming out of ISO 3200 and similarly with the films – here also the most secure value is ISO 1600 (ISO 3200 is still useful though).Same quality pictures can not be cast much because it is just good (obviously at lower ISO). The images are nicely saturated and the colors are well selected, but the tonal gradations and detail of the pictures show that the Lumiksa GH5 is unlikely to be used for professional photography . In fact, the photographic part we could avoid in this review, after all, there is probably no person who GH5 buys for taking pictures. From a journalistic obligation, however, the issues involved in taking photos should be discussed. Here are some sample photos taken with the camera. Full resolution cadence can be seen in the gallery . [Gallery ids = "132598,132600,132602,132604,132606,132608,132610,132612,132614,132616,132618,132620"] Sensational is a sharpening system that is based on 255 focus points – was created for the correct and quick focus. Sharpening while shooting, but also when taking pictures is excellent. Blades instantly and accurately, and the focus point can be freely set by touch screen or joystick. One can not fail to mention also useful for shooting functions. Known from previous models, 4K Photo replaced 6K Photo. This means that continuous shooting can be done at the speed at which we shot movies, such as 30 frames per second, with fixed or continuous autofocus. Another interesting feature is the Post Focus. The camera uses it to save the image so that we can later select the right focus point ourselves if it turns out that we have not sharpened what is needed. It is also worth mentioning the possibility of communication of the camera, because in this respect the model does excellent job. We have all available wireless systems here, including WiFi, NFC and Bluetooth. It is worth mentioning, however, that these systems support the latest standards. WiFi therefore works in ac standard and Bluetooth version 4.1 . This is extremely important because transferring huge movie files over a wireless connection of the previous generation would not be welcome.
Time for what the tigers like most. Over the movie mode I want to skew a bit more because it's a key element of the camera. We can film in 4K, but after all, it offers more and more cameras. GH5, however, shoots at this quality at 50 frames per second, and that's a big difference, giving you more fluidity, or the ability to slow down the picture. The second difference is the image format. In addition to the standard 4K UHD (3840 x 2160), which gives 50 fps, we can also shoot in a better quality 4K DCI (4096 x 2160) cinema . In it the speed is 24 frames per second, but the image quality is comparable to the professional Super 35 cameras. It is worth mentioning that we record with settings 4: 2: 2 / with 10 bit depth. 4K Bitrate may be 150 Mbps, but it's not enough for professionals. Therefore, the software update provides the ability to shoot at 400 Mbps , which is extremely clean. Of course, to make a bit of this bitter, you need to have an external hard drive, because today's fastest memory cards support a write speed of 300 Mbps, although it's probably a matter of time when it will increase to 400 Mbps. In Full HD we can freely adjust the frame rate and the maximum number is 180 fps. This gives us the ability to shoot slow-motion in exceptionally good quality (with a bitrate of about 180 Mbps). Full HD movies can be recorded in 4: 2: 0 / 8bit and bitrate up to 100 Mbps or even 200 Mbps after firmware upgrade. The settings allow us to see what really means Full HD, which in this camera better than 4K resolution on smartphones or cheap cameras. The most important information from the point of view of filmmakers is certainly 10-bit color depth. What distinguishes professional amateur devices is the tonal range, so the ability to deal with low and high tones in the picture – cheap camera light elements, or will show black spots on the dark. 10-bit recording guarantees a cinematic tonal range and the detail of the recorded image is awe-inspiring. Do not forget also that the camera offers special film profiles: Cinelike D / Cinelike V / Like709 / V-LogL . They have reduced contrast and each can provide even greater tonal range, especially the V-Log, but you need to be able to use it to not ruin the frame. C4K 4: 2: 2/10 bit depth and V-Log shooting make the picture really impressive. No exaggeration can be said that the quality of the material recorded at these parameters meet the requirements of the cinema and I have the impression that in the off-road movies GH5 will find use because it still costs significantly less than the cheapest cameras Super 35. Of course the biggest disadvantage of the model still remains its matrix. While Sony is struggling to beat record highs, driving up to almost a million in the A7S II, Panasonic is not even trying to pretend that it's high in its ISO camera. The maximum is 12,800 in film mode, which shows that the manufacturer at least does not try to cheat us. I accept the value of 3200, above the noise level is too high for me, although on the black elements even at 3200 notice a small grain. This means that unfortunately we will not use GH5 in low light conditions, because even with the brightest problems, sometimes the light will simply not be enough. The GH5 element is an outdoor and well-lighted movie plan . It is also worth noting that the manufacturer has practically completely managed to offset the "rolling shutter" effect of many cameras. In the Panasonik we do not really know him, which only confirms that the model can act as a professional camera. As I already wrote before, the camera during the customs clearance is considered as a camera, due to the fact of eliminating the limit for filming. There is no 15 or 30 minute limit here – we can spin as long as the battery or memory card is allowed. This is a great advantage in case, for example, filming events when the camera has to record all the time. Autofocus also does a great job of becoming fully useful while shooting movies, though its speed and accuracy is not better than other high-end cameras, and I even have the impression that AF was slightly better at dealing with the cheaper A6300. The AF system works quickly and efficiently, but it is not innovative. The camera features popular zebra or Focus Peaking functions, and you can also set the color of your image using a curve that can be flexed freely. The 5-axis matrix stabilization works well with stabilizer on the manufacturer's lenses. With such a large tripod tripod or rig completely lose their use.
Summary and evaluation
The Panasonic GH5 is a model long awaited by film buffs. The expectations for him were great and at the end of the test I can honestly say: Lumix did it. This is a fully professional filmmaking tool that works wonders in the hands of a skilled filmmaker, and thanks to a really nice price (8700 $ per body) becomes a cheap alternative to the Super 35 cameras, so independent filmmakers gain the tools they need to get a quality picture of a well- With professional production. GH5, however, has some limitations. The biggest is the small matrix and everything connected with it. We must accept that the camera will provide us with excellent image quality only when the ISO is low enough. Looking for a camera for weddings, in my opinion, choose one of Sony models. But filming in good light with Lumix GH5 can be surprisingly out of reach. In my eyes, the camera without two words deserved the distinction of "Choice of redaction".[temperature2 product_id = "22114"]
