In this paper we focus only on the high amount of megapixels – what it is needed, which brings benefits and whether in fact it is so essential to us as it may seem.
First and foremost, high resolution is not a determinant of quality, and certainly not the most important. Relevant are many other factors such as the physical size of the matrix, the structure, the size of individual pixels (and closely related to the light sensitivity), or even the performance of image processing algorithms. These aspects will move in the following texts – today we focus only on the resolution and its impact on the photograph. The simplest evidence to support the thesis of the superiority of the other aspects of the megapixels? Take a picture of an 8-megapixel phone and compare it with the photograph made with a sensor SLR lower resolution. And what – which is better?
Higher resolution is freedom of framing
simple thing – with 16-megapixel personnel, we can relatively easily trim, then, and so fail to print it out in a big size. The result is the freedom to crop, allowing – even – comfortable adjusting the proportion of relations the sides or the laying of the composition according to whim. With high-end equipment can also trim the image to a much greater extent, revealing details of the frame visible at first glance. Just look at the photo of the Land Rover Evoque made Ojcow National Park – framing equipment with lower resolutions, we would not be able to make such an approximation for the registration plate.
The higher the camera, including – in most cases – a higher resolution displays. This, in turn, with the appropriate class hardware, provide us with much more detail preserved in the photograph. Of course, it also depends on the ISO sensitivity selected, the light conditions and many other factors; but if we compare a photograph of a 10-megapixel and 16-megapixel, done in the same circumstances, the same two cameras, the latter inevitably will be richer in detail.
Less disk space …
Advantages of advantages, but the higher the resolution, the larger the size of the file. Your hard, accustomed to small, 6-megapixel images, the change over a 24-megapixel camera can experience sudden contraction. Place starts to disappear at a rate that will cease to exist, before you know it – as well once may invest in some form of digital archive.
… And memory cards
The same applies to the memory card. These small, 4-gigabyte media enough for a dozen, maybe dozens of photos; buy more stately SD or CF will not comfort but a necessity.
Higher resolution is often more noise
Hypothetical scenario: we have two cameras in the same class, with the dies made in a similar technology with similar physical size. One of them features a resolution of 12 megapixels, another – 36 megapixels. Inevitably, the other equipment has more pixels, but the pixels of a smaller size.
